Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally-invasive treatment method that destroys cancer cells through radiofrequency energy that heats the targeted tissue.

To apply RFA in the prostate, small probes are introduced in and/or around the tumor. As a focal therapy, RFA has the benefits of decreasing potential adverse events and reduced recovery times compared to radical treatments such as prostatectomy.

But similar to other thermal ablation modalities, for example Cryotherapy, the technique is based on heat, which means that the application will also effect tissue infrastructures such as nerves, vessels and sphincter.

There are currently no comprehensive studies comparing RFA with IRE.
